The City of Norfolk began a three-year contract to obtain bridge inspections of its 60+ bridges and culverts to ensure their structural integrity and safety.
Moffatt & Nichol is currently serving as the engineering firm providing inspection and engineering services for the City’s 49 structures. Services under this contract to date include performing NBIS inspections of the City's vehicular bridges, pedestrian bridges, culverts, and underpasses, as well as load ratings, maintenance and repair designs, and construction documents on these same structures. We typically complete the NBIS inspections of the City’s larger structures including the Campostella, Hampton Blvd and Granby Street Bridges by means of aerial platform equipment (snoopers or moogs), pontoon boats with scaffolding and standard inspection equipment. In addition to inspecting the City’s larger inventory, we routinely assist the City’s inspection staff as needed with additional inspection support for routine or emergency inspections on their remaining inventory while providing general consultation on element level data, rating conditions and recommendations. As part of this contract, we assist the City with maximizing the service life of their bridges by providing design services. These services have included rehabilitation of all bridge elements through local, state and federal funds. Rehabilitation projects scope of work have included deck overlays (epoxy and latex), bearing replacements, concrete repairs and fender improvements.
