Coney Island Rockaway Inlet to Norton Point Shore Protection

Moffatt & Nichol’s involvement in this project dates to the original General Design Memorandum (GDM) and the design and initial construction 1994.

In 2004, the Moffatt & Nichol joint venture team was tasked by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to review, modify, and finalize the conceptual design of the T‐groin developed by Moffatt & Nichol in 1998. We also provided engineering and design for repairs to the West 37th Street terminal groin that had been constructed as part of the Coney Island beach fill project; it had suffered damage at its seaward end since the 1994 improvements. Our team completed a new condition survey of the project area in spring 2011, and Moffatt & Nichol developed updated plans and specifications. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was awarded the construction contract for the Sea Gate modification of the project in late 2014 with construction completed in 2016. Moffatt & Nichol provided construction support services, including site visits/inspections, and RFI responses throughout construction. Construction cost for the Sea Gate project modification was approximately $26 million.
