Hydrogen Use in Colombian Port Equipment

Hydrogen as an alternative energy source for terminal equipment was at the heart of a market study to gauge demand at Colombian ports.

Moffatt & Nichol was engaged by Sumitomo Corporation Andes S.A.S. to undertake a market analysis of the Colombian port sector and specifically the potential demand for hydrogen to meet the energy consumption of port-related equipment.

Moffatt & Nichol determined the potential hydrogen demand for five main cargo sectors in Colombia – containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, general cargo and coal. A volume forecast was developed to estimate hydrogen future consumption, as this is directly correlated with volume handled in Colombia.

Moffatt & Nichol also assessed the Colombian port sector, its equipment and consumption. The equipment suitability for each cargo sector was considered in order to estimate hydrogen consumption more accurately, as not all equipment has the same suitability to transition.

Finally, scenarios were built based on equipment suitability and the volume forecasts, resulting in the hydrogen demand estimates for the port sector.

Moffatt & Nichol determined that there is the potential for hydrogen use in Colombian port operations, particularly in the container sector. Demand will be heavily influenced by the strength of decarbonisation policies, emission reduction incentives and international markets and prices. Currently, there is insufficient awareness amongst Colombian port operators.
