To improve traffic operations and improve bridge safety, the city of Newport News proactively slated the Warwick Boulevard bridge over The Mariner’s Lake for replacement.
As part of an on-call professional engineering services contract for the inspection and design of bridges, we provided engineering services to replace the bridge that carries Warwick Boulevard over The Mariners' Lake in Newport News. The 144-foot-long bridge was built in 1931 and widened in 1960, and near the end of its design life. Our engineering design team prepared plans, specifications, and construction estimates for a two-span continuous bridge, with an overall length of 153 feet. The new bridge carries six lanes of traffic. The northeast bridge approach was improved by adding one through lane from the Warwick Boulevard intersection with the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard intersection and through its intersection with Riverside Regional Medical Center. The redesign project included phased construction and a shared-use path design. Project complexities included coordinating the many utilities that use the bridge to cross the waterway and minimizing traffic impacts along Warwick Boulevard during construction. The project was administered in accordance with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Locally Administered Projects Manual, and, as a revenue sharing project, the City of Newport News received matching funds from VDOT for the replacement bridge.
