Imagine an exciting transportation engineering planning and design environment that features 120,000-plus centerline miles of public roadways, multimodal facilities, seaports, and even space ports—some with extreme over-water spans, coastal exposure, and potential seasonal impacts from Mother Nature. Pair that with a transportation agency that appreciates and expects innovation, and you have an engineer’s paradise: Florida.
When Moffatt & Nichol opened its first Florida office in 1994, the firm brought its highly respected structural and coastal engineering know-how to Tampa, along with a corporate culture that prioritized client satisfaction.
“Our early transportation work for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) involved bridge widening projects,” observes Moffatt & Nichol Senior Vice President, Darrell Nance. “Since then, we’ve done a good job of managing client expectations under general engineering contracts that demand a full array of transportation services, from planning and staff augmentation to intelligent traffic design.”
To keep pace with Florida’s consistent growth and to better serve diverse regional transportation needs, Moffatt & Nichol today has offices in Chipley, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and, of course, Tampa. Work has expanded beyond niche bridge widening projects and from one FDOT district to four, plus Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and Central Florida Expressway Authority.
“We are excited about our work for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise,” says Senior Transportation Project Manager Bill Terwilleger. “We are currently designing a four- to eight-lane widening project for seven miles of the turnpike mainline, including operational improvements at three interchanges, all-electronic tolling, signalization, lighting, and intelligent transportation systems—all in a 3D design format.”
“We are so pleased to work be working with great Florida clients like FDOT, Santa Rosa County, the ports of Tampa, Everglades, and Palm Beach, and many others. Great clients push their advisors for new ideas, and we are excited to bring new ideas, technologies, and commercial applications to our Florida clients,” comments Moffatt & Nichol President and Chief Executive Officer, Eric Nichol. “We are seeing a great environment for making strides in the future of transportation design here in Florida.”
