For a client seeking to evaluate long-term competitive viability in a constrained port setting, Moffatt & Nichol applied operational expertise to support commercial analysis.
Moffatt & Nichol was engaged by Noatum Ports to assess the feasibility of different automation solutions for Noatum Container Terminal Valencia, with the intention of remaining highly competitive in an increasingly congested port environment in the West Mediterranean/North African region.
The commercial analysis consisted of a market study to evaluate current and future market conditions, volume projections which reflected the future potential throughput of the terminal, and a quantitative business plan model which integrated the volume projections, revenue, and cost inputs under the various recommended operating/automation solutions.
The technical team developed a base case of the existing operational concept using the current manned RTG operation and three alternative semi- to fully automated terminal concepts, including AutoCAD and PDF layout in plan view and a cross section of the terminal. Moffatt & Nichol also performed a detailed capacity analysis for each of the terminal layouts including a phasing plan for the most viable option.
