As part of a joint venture under contract with the USACE, Moffatt & Nichol was selected to perform a feasibility-level reformulation study of the shore protection and storm damage reduction project for the Atlantic coast of Long Island, NY, a distance of approximately 83 miles.
The objective of the study was to identify a long-term solution to manage the risk of coastal storm damages along the densely populated and economically valuable south shore, in a manner that balances the risks to human life and property, while maintaining, enhancing, and restoring ecosystem integrity and coastal biodiversity.
In response to Hurricane Sandy, Moffatt & Nichol prepared Hurricane Sandy limited re-evaluation reports for two interim protection projects within the study area: Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet and Downtown Montauk. The objective of these interim projects was to provide immediate, short-term coastal storm risk management measures to vulnerable areas along the south shore of Long Island. The Montauk project and the first contract of the Fire Island stabilization project are now substantially complete. Construction cost for these two interim projects was approximately $60 million.
