Since 2005, Moffatt & Nichol has provided survey, data analysis and reporting services to monitor and document the condition of all seven miles of Norfolk’s Ocean View shoreline, from the terminal groin at Willoughby Spit to the jetties at Little Creek Inlet.
Data collected under this program has been used to aid the City in beach management decision making as well as verify the design lives of current and proposed projects. In recent years, the City succeeded, working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District, in obtaining Congressional approval, funding and construction of a Federal Coastal Storm Damage Reduction beach nourishment project. The construction of this 1.2 million cubic yard nourishment project provides very significant storm protection and recreational benefit. The beach and nearshore monitoring data provided by Moffatt & Nichol and its subconsultant Geodynamics were utilized in the design of the Federal project. Their consistency in the capture, processing and analysis of future monitoring data will help the City to meet its monitoring and maintenance commitments.
