The Huntington Beach Pier is iconic to the Southern California landscape and is one of the longest on the West Coast.
Moffatt & Nichol designed a state-of-the-art 1,850-foot-long reinforced concrete pier to replace the deteriorated, storm-damaged, 74-year-old Huntington Beach Municipal Pier. The new pier retained the historic architectural style of the original pier, including haunches at the pile caps and corbels supporting the light standards, while meeting current seismic and wave design criteria. Our team designed the new pier to withstand a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and slopes gently upward toward its seaward end where a 31-foot-high wave can pass beneath it. Our design increased the pier’s pile spacings to accommodate surfers. In addition to the structure, the firm provided design for all utility piping, including sewer, domestic water, fire protection, and gas mains. Moffatt & Nichol received the “Outstanding Project Award” by the California Geotechnical Engineers Association for this project.
